Dyslexia is a neurological language-based learning disability and often runs in families. Approximately, 15–20% of the population have some of the symptoms of dyslexia (e.g., slow or inaccurate reading, poor spelling, poor writing, or mixing up similar words). Children can present with either mild, moderate, or severe dyslexia. In the Palm Beach school district, dyslexia falls under the Exceptional Student Education (ESE) eligibility of a Specific Learning Disability (SLD). Children with this disability have difficulty with reading and spelling that can be largely due to phonological, orthographic, or a mixture of both deficits. That being said, not every child who has reading difficulties has dyslexia.
A comprehensive psycho-educational evaluation is necessary to identify your child’s personal strengths and weaknesses. In addition, an evaluation also provides individualized recommendations, per your child’s cognitive profile and includes effective methods to help your child excel academically.
